Viikon Kovin Biisi (Finnish 🇫🇮 for “best song of the week”) is a weekly social-media-fuelled, music competition open for all artists and bands who can submit their Spotify song via vkb.fi website.

Anyone can vote for their favorite songs from Monday to Thursday by liking the competition posts in social media.

History

The ingenious VKB concept was invented by a Finnish teacher and composer/musician Mika Virta.

After a year of running the show alone – by using email and Excel worksheets – he started to cooperate with Finnish culture e-zine Emotion Zine, which, in turn, created a path for developing the concept further, mainly by automating the competition system.

I visualized the automated-to-the-teeth version of a system for the competition, and as Mika was excited to turn it into reality, we started to develop the technical VKB system in assistance with my fellow programmer Kai Kallio. The crew brainstormed features with Mika operating as product owner.

VKB logo

The space theme of the VKB brand has an interesting history.

Mika created the original Viikon Kovin Biisi logo on his computer and took a photo of his monitor displaying the logo for submitting it to social media.

The logo had black background and the stars were ACTUALLY DUST PARTICLES ON HIS SCREEN! 😀
